<Steps for Permanent Residence Application Procedure>
1. Initial Inquiry and Consultation
We explain the application process, provide a cost estimate, confirm the necessity of a permanent residence permit, and check whether you meet the guidelines for permanent residency.
2. Preparation of Required Documents
Gather the necessary documents according to your current residence status.
3. Document Preparation and Signature
Prepare the application documents and obtain the applicant’s signature.
4. Submission of Application
Submit the permanent residence permit application to the regional Immigration Services Agency, along with the residence card and passport.
5. Notification of Approval
After approximately 4 to 8 months (depending on the review process), the approval notice will be mailed to our office.
6. Collection of New Residence Card
Prepare the approval notice, passport, residence card, and payment slip, and collect the new residence card from the Immigration Services Agency.
7. Delivery of Documents
Deliver the new residence card and other documents to the client.
【Important Notes Regarding Permanent Residence Applications】
・The requirements for obtaining permanent residence vary depending on your current residence status (employment-based, status-based, or long-term resident).
・If your current period of stay expires during the permanent residence application process, you will need to apply for an extension of stay.
・The guarantor must be a Japanese citizen or a foreigner who holds permanent residence status (including special permanent residents).
・Ensure there are no unpaid social insurance contributions, no traffic violations, or other issues that may disqualify you. If necessary, take measures to meet the guidelines.
【Guidelines for Permanent Residence (Legal Requirements)】
①Good Conduct:Applicants must demonstrate good behavior and conduct.
②Financial Independence:Applicants must have sufficient assets or skills to maintain an independent livelihood.
③Contribution to Japan’s Interests
a.Generally, applicants must have resided in Japan for at least 10 consecutive years, including 5 years under a working or residential status (excluding “Technical Intern Training” and “Specified Skilled Worker 1”).
b.Must not have received penalties such as fines or imprisonment. Public obligations, such as taxes, public pension and medical insurance premiums, and notifications required by the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, must be appropriately fulfilled.
c.Applicants must currently hold the longest possible period of stay for their current residence status, as stipulated in Table 2 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
d.Applicants must not pose a risk to public health.
Exceptions: Spouses or children of Japanese citizens, permanent residents, or special permanent residents are only required to meet requirements ① and ②.
Refugees and individuals eligible for complementary protection are exempt from requirement ②.
