< Additional Procedures Required Other Than Application for Acquisition of Status of Residence >
[For those renouncing Japanese nationality]
Submit a notification of renunciation of nationality to the Legal Affairs Bureau or Regional Legal Affairs Bureau, or to the embassy/consulate.
Target individuals: Those who have both Japanese nationality and foreign nationality and intend to renounce Japanese nationality. If the individual is under 15 years old, a legal representative such as a parent must appear in person.
[For foreign nationals (babies) born in Japan]
Submit a birth notification to the municipal office within 14 days of birth.
Report the birth and apply for a passport (if desired) at the embassy or consulate (foreign mission in Japan). The deadline for birth registration varies by country.
We also assist with obtaining Apostille, Authentication of Official Seal, and Consular Legalization required for birth registration (birth report).
< If one or both parents of the newborn baby are Special Permanent Residents >
The newborn baby can be applicable for Special Permanent Resident status. If the application is made within 60 days of birth or loss of nationality, it can be processed at the municipal office. If this deadline is missed, or the child is born overseas and enters Japan later, the application must be made at the Immigration Services Agency. Prior confirmation is crucial.
